'Fun Fare'
Locals vie for prizes in Cake......at the 70th annual Mtry. County Fair
Written by Kathryn Petruccelli Herald Correspondent
Where else can you eat pink sugar whipped into a bouffant and mounted on a stick, then, your brain still under the influence of that sweet, dizzy dream, hand over paper tickets to be whipped around yourself, crushed into the side of your companion in a mechanical blitz of wind and laughter? The Monterey County Fair comes once a year. This year's theme, "That's Entertainment," is chock-full of opportunities for locals and wanna-be-locals to experience and create the personlity of Mtry. County.
Jim Culcasi, Jr. and his wife Susan have a romantic attachment to the Mtry County Fair (and to food). They met at the fair in August of 1978, when they were just 14. They were married 10 years later.
The Culcasi's decided to sponsor Date night on Friday, a first-time event with babysitting by Corporate Kids Events/VIP Babysitting provided free.
Culcasi is the owner of Rosine's Restaurant in Monterey. "We've always been a great support team for each other," said Culcasi of his marriage. Even with three boys ranging in age from 4-12, they make sure to make time for each other.
Cake eating at 7 p.m. is also sponsored by Rosine's, which is known for its impossibly huge and rich desserts. Culcasi nurtured the tradition of the colossal cake himself. "When I first started (in the Restaurant business) and my wife was pregnant with our first child, I gained 50 lbs," he said. He's lost it since, but says he excercises constantly. If he's tempted these days, he tells himself, "I know what it tastes like." Culcasi will bake the mammoth creations in varieties of chocolate, chocolate peanut butter and oreo. "They'll be garnished like our cakes, so contestants will be covered in chocolate, fudge, marshmallow and candy, It should be a sight!"
Pfeuffer, the chili judge will double as a cake eating contestant. "I love Rosine's cakes, firest of all," she noted. "When I found out they were chocolate that sealed the deal." Pfeuffer will be defending her title from the ninth grade pie eating contest where she beat all the boys. "I love the fair," she said. "You can be 2 or 33 years old like me, and you go and you feel like a kid."
