"I would find It hard to believe that anyone could go to Rosine's for lunch and be either disappointed or leave hungry. Whether you're a light eater or have a "working person's" appetite, lunch at Rosine's is the ticket."

'Leave room for dessert at Rosine's!'

"Eating lunch here can fill up the whole family" We made our way down and across Alvarado Street in Monterey, after catching a Sunday matinee movie, intent on finding a lunch that would satisfy our children's palates and ours. We made up our minds, and Rosine's was our target of choice. Originally opened by Jim and Rosine Culcasi with their four children, Rosine's has been serving orders and contentment for about 25 years (20 of those years in downtown Monterey). The dining area's decor, with its windows-on-the-wall facade and warm colors, gives it the semblance of a courtyard. Spacious family-sized booths line the dining room walls and tables abound. The staff's conduct is similar to that of hosts in a familiar home rather than servers in a restaurant. As manager Annette Culcasi-Ivers said: "This is my family, Rosine is my mom." Children are given cleverly folded menus that envelop a small handful of crayons. The children's menu is a list preceded by two pages of games and pictures for coloring. Items include breakfast, lunch and dinner choices. Parents' menus have everything from homemade soups, salads and sandwiches to broiler entrees and pastas. While Richard Robert and Audrey immediately chose the corn dog and fries for their lunch, Erik took a moment longer before choosing the cheese pizza. As for the adults, the New York steak sandwich was the item of choice. Those who have visited Rosine's seem to remember one main feature: the dessert display by the entrance. All of the desserts at Rosine's are made fresh daily and vary from day to day. Choices may include specialty cream cakes and pies (Oreo cookie, Kit-Kat and peanut butter cup) as well as more traditional dessert items (strawberry pie, German chocolate cake and carrot cake). On our particular visit, Rosine's satisfying lunch portions left little room for dessert. Maybe next time we'll skip our meals and have our cakes first.... and eat them too!
