THE GALLEY
by Richard LeBlanc

Of all the restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula, there is one that we always consider going to whenever we decide to go out to eat. It doesn't matter if it's for breakfast, lunch or dinner. When we want good food, value for our money, consistent quality and a clean, friendly atmosphere, we have to think about Rosine's! We have experienced all three meals, and we are going to talk about our all-around favorite whenever we just don't want to do it ourselves.

I am partial to breakfast! I can eat breakfast for dinner and be quite content and I can do that at Rosine's. Breakfast is served all day and what a breakfast it is! My favorite is Calamari 'n Eggs served with country fries and a choice of toast or English muffin. The Calamari is always cooked to perfection and there is always plenty of it. The omelettes are outrageously large, the pancakes 'n waffles are hot and golden brown, the Hollandaise sauce on the Eggs Benedict is perfect and no one can be disappointed with an order of Jim's Special, a combination of eggs, spinach, ground beef, mushrooms, onions and spices which is always cooked just right and is always delicious. And, don't forget the coffee! Even if the food was not as good as it is, we would still go there for the coffee.

Then there's Lunch! I would find It hard to believe that anyone could go to Rosine's for lunch and be either a) disappointed or b) leave hungry. Whether you're a light eater or have a "working person's" appetite, lunch at Rosine's is the ticket. There are not many places where you can get a half a sandwich (your choice of bread) with a cup of soup or green salad for under $4.00, Then there is always the Italian Meatball Sandwich with a wonderful homemade sauce and lots of melted Jack cheese which is always enough to full up anyone. All sandwiches are served with your choice of french fries, homemade potato salad, homemade cole slaw or green salad with your choice of dressing. All sandwiches, whether it's a burger from the broiler or a sandwich special or an old favorite, are large and made with the best ingredients such as fresh cooked turkey and fresh cooked roast beef (real turkey and roast beef, not pressed deli meat). You'll never be disappointed with a lunch at Rosine's. Lunches are also served all day. Our daughter and son-in-law have almost made Rosine's a Friday night ritual. They go there for a generous portion of medium rare, fresh cooked Prime Rib which is served on Friday and Saturday nights only. My wife has yet to get completely through an order of homemade Lasagna, her favorite choice for dinner.

My favorite is something I sort of create on my own. I'll either order a side order of Calamari steak or the Calamari Strips Appetizer along with an order of the Fettuccini Alfredo. I then cut the Calamari into bite-size pieces and mix it into the fettucini. Heavenly! The major problem is my wife and I have never had room left to try one of those famous homemade desserts that delight the eye and tease the appetite when entering the restaurant. After all, the entrees are all served with soup and tossed green salad (generous portions) and fresh vegetables and french bread and butter. The pasta dishes are served with soup or salad and garlic bread. I guess we are just going to have to make a special trip there someday. Just for dessert, which is not an uncommon thing for a lot of local's in the know.

The best endorsement for Rosine's is that it is always busy whenever we have gone there. Yet, there were at least three other restaurants located at the same site. 434 Alvarado Street, which went belly up! Many restaurants have come and gone on the peninsula, but Rosine's is an institution and definitely A Place for All Meals!
